Brad Cox is a Kentucky native and considered one of the budding young trainers in the country. His love for the game began, like so many race fans, with trips to the track with his dad when he was young. After that Cox continued to be involved with horses throughout his youth. At just 13 years old he became involved on the backside of the track serving as a hot walker and a groom for other trainers. At age 19 he began working with famed trainer Dallas Stewart as his lead assistant.

Cox left Stewart’s barn in 2004 in search of his own training career. He earned his first career victory in December of that year with a horse at Turfway Park named One Lucky Storm. From there his career failed to heat up.

In the first several years of his career he struggled to gain any significant clientele running less than 100 horses in each of his first 6 years.  His career took off when powerhouse ownership groups like Juddmonte Farms and Spendthrift began enlisting his services. Since that time he has emerged as one of the dominant trainers in the country eclipsing 20 stakes wins in each of the last 6 years.

Accomplishments

Although training since 2004 Cox didn’t earn his first grade 1 victory until 2017 when Monomoy Girl won the Ashland in his home state of Kentucky. He has since gone on to win other major grade 1 races around the country including the Kentucky Oaks, the Clark Handicap, The Pegasus World Cup, and the Blue Grass Stakes. Brad Cox has also won Breeder’s Cup 7 Breeder’s Cup races spanning over 6 different race divisions.

In 2020 Cox was awarded the Eclipse Award for top trainer in the United States.
