Man O' War Race Predictions/Preview

The horses that will be lining up to compete in the race will not be announced until closer to the time of the race. Declarations could be made around 3rd May, with the 2021 race set to take place on Saturday, 8th May. Runners that tend to run in the Man O' War Stakes tend to go on and challenge for the Breeders' Cup Turf later in the season. Last year's winner of the race could be set to run again in the race this year. At this point, we can only speculate about the runners that could line up. But these are some horses that could compete for the Man O' War Stakes:

  • Colonel Liam

  • Hit The Road

  • Churn N Burn

  • Raging Bull

  • Juliet Foxtrot

  • Tarnawa

All of the horses that can be seen above have won Graded turf races in the United States this season, and therefore could be likely contenders for the Man O' War Stakes. Tarnawa enjoyed a season to remember last season, as the five-year-old won the Breeders' Cup Turf by a length from Magical. He hasn't competed in the Man O' War Stakes before, and could target the race in 2021.

Colonel Liam could be the outstanding American-trained hopeful for the Man O' War Stakes, as he has won on all three starts this season. The four-year-old won the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Turf Stakes in January, and recently returned to the track by winning the Grade 2 Muniz Memorial Classic Stakes.

Hit The Road is another talented four-year-old, and he is trained by Dan Blacker. He started the season with back-to-back Graded wins after a long break away from the track. He added the Grade 1 Frank E. Kilroe Stakes to the Grade 3 Thunder Road Stakes in March. However, he most recently finished fifth in the Grade 1 Maker's Mark Mile behind Raging Bull.

That success for the six-year-old trained by Chad Brown was a first win since May 2020. That success in May came in the form of the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile Stakes and highlights excellent Graded form. Churn N Burn is a lightly raced four-year-old and claimed success in the Grade 2 Pan American Stakes. Meanwhile, Juliet Foxtrot for trainer Brad Cox won the Grade 1 Coolmore Jenny Wiley Stakes in April at Keeneland.

Man O' War Event Information/History

The stars of the turf will be on full display in the Man O' War Stakes. It has been a race on the American calendar since being introduced in 1959. The first time it took place, the race was held at Aqueduct. Furthermore, the race has been held at that track in 1961 and between 1963 and 1967. The race was renamed in honor of Man O' War in 1959 for the first time.

This race typically took place in the fall but was moved to the summer schedule at Belmont Park. It swapped places with the Bowling Green Handicap, as it was decided that the Man O' War Stakes would be fairer on the turf at this stage of the season. The race has been run over the 1 3/8 miles distance since 1978.

Secretariat famously won the race in 1973 and also set the quickest record over the previous distance of 1 ½ miles. Better Talk Now's win in 2005 set the record for the current distance. A number of horses have achieved multiple successes, with Majesty's Prince, Gio Ponti, Solar Splendor, and With Anticipation all having won the Man O' War Stakes twice. The race wasn't staged in 2020, with the most recent winner of the Grade 1 being Channel Maker for trainer William Mott in 2019.
