The two days of action brings together some of the best horses from around the world, with horses from Europe traveling over to the United States to compete in the turf races. The Breeders’ Cup Turf is the second most lucrative race on the card and is competed over 1 ½ miles. Legendary horses have run in the race, and history-making achievements are common.

One of the greatest feats was achieved in 2018, as Enable traveled over from the United Kingdom to compete in the race. He won the illustrious race, which saw him become the first horse to win the Breeders’ Cup Turf and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in the same calendar year.

The biggest race of the meeting is the Breeders’ Cup Classic, which is the final Group 1 of the season for three-year-olds. Horses that have been competing in the Triple Crown races throughout the season often target the Classic as their final race of the season, and it is typically regarded as the fourth leg of the Grand Slam of racing. There has only been one horse in the history of racing to achieve wins in four legs in the same calendar year, and that was American Pharoah in 2015.

Tiznow is the only multiple winner of the race, as he successfully defended his title in 2011. Bob Baffert is the most popular trainer in this race, as he has trained the winner on four occasions. His most recent win came last year with Authentic, who became the first horse to win this race in under two minutes since Bayern in 2014.

Breeders’ Cup History

The Breeders’ Cup has been one of the most competitive meetings of the racing season since it was inaugurated in 1984. When it was first established, it was just a one-day event, but that changed in 2007 when an extra day of racing was introduced. Unlike many of the biggest races that take place throughout the year, the Breeders’ Cup venue changes every year. It has been staged in America on all but one occasion since its establishment. The only exception to that came in 1996 when it moved north of the border and took place at Woodbine Racetrack.

Due to the venue changing every year, the attendances at the Breeders’ Cup differ from year to year.  The current record was set in 2016, as 118,484 spectators attending across two days at Santa Anita. The lowest attended Breeders’ Cup came in 2007, as 69,584 fans attended the meeting at Monmouth Park.

Mike Smith has produced the most winning rides as a jockey at the Breeders’ Cup, as he has claimed 26 victories. Meanwhile, D. Wayne Lukas leads the way for trainers, as he has claimed 20 winners throughout the history of the race. The most lucrative owner in the history of the event is Juddmonte Farms, who have accumulated $17,135.820 in prize money.
