Belmont Derby Preview

The Belmont Derby attracts some of the best three-year-olds in training on the turf, which always ensures that it is a competitive race. However, the entries for the big race will not be announced until the week of the race. Below you will find some of the most recent winners of the famous Grade 1.

  • Gufo (2020)

  • Henley’s Joy (2019)

The race typically attracts the most talented horses on turf, and there have also been winners that have traveled to the United States for the race. The winner in 2016 was Deauville, who crossed over from Ireland for the famous Grade 1. The horse was trained by Aiden O’Brien and was ridden to victory by Jamie Spencer. However, the most recent winners have all been American-trained.

Gamblers will need to examine trends before placing a bet on the Belmont Derby. We can assess the route taken by last year’s winner. Before competing in the delayed Belmont Derby in 2020, the Christophe Clement-trained horse has won three from four starts. He had also won a Graded race before lining up for the Belmont Derby in the form of the Grade 3 Kent Stakes at Delaware Park. He didn’t come into the race with a perfect record, though, as he was beaten on his final start before the Belmont Derby by Domestic Spending in the Saratoga Derby Invitational Stakes.

Henley’s Joy had a lot more experience on the track before winning his Belmont Derby, as he had lined up on eight occasions. His form heading into the Belmont Derby wasn’t eye-catching, as the best result that he achieved in the build-up was a second in the Grade 3 Kentucky Utilities Transylvania Stakes.

Catholic Boy won the Belmont Derby in 2018, as he beat Analyze by a neck. Before that win, he had won four from seven starts. Like Gufo, he had achieved Graded success before the race at Belmont Park. Catholic Boy had won Grade 2 Remsen Stakes and the Grade 3 Pennine Ridge Stakes. Oscar Performance also won the Pennine Ridge Stakes on his way to Belmont Derby success. Both Force The Pass and Mr Speaker also won Graded races before lining up for the Belmont Derby.

Belmont Derby History

The Belmont Derby has been an important race for thoroughbreds since being formed in 1929. It was initially known as the Jamaica Handicap and became part of the Turf Trinity when it was established in 2019. The biggest changes regarding the race came in 2014, as the name changed, and it was switched from a meeting in October to take place in July. As well as that, the distance covered in the race was also altered from 1 1/8 miles to the distance it is today.

The race was staged at the Jamaica Racecourse from 1929 until 1959. After the closure of the course in New York, it was moved to Aqueduct, where it was staged on a number of occasions between 1960 and 1987. The race was moved onto the turf in 1994 and was granted Grade 1 status in 2009.

Henley’s Joy broke the speed record for the race in 2019 when he won in a time of 1:58.29. Meanwhile, George D. Widener Jr is the most successful owner in this race. Richard Migliore is the most successful jockey. His win on board Artie Schiller in 2004 was his fourth success.
