Black Caviar: The Undefeated

There are champions, and there is Black Caviar. The Australian Thoroughbred racehorse has eclipsed previous records, winning several titles, and remained unbeaten for all twenty-five career races. Black Caviar was active in the race scene for five years and dominated every track she stepped on. The accomplishments of this mare were nothing short of extraordinary, which led to a life-sized bronze statue of the champion to be erected in the township of Nagambie. The sculpture was done by Mitch Mitchell in 2013, shortly after the mare's retirement.

Black Caviar's Achievements

It was an amazing five-year racing run for the mare as she recorded back-to-back victories in all lifetime races. The most significant win for Black Caviar was the GBR Diamond Jubilee Stakes in 2012. She had to endure a 30-hour flight from Australia to the United Kingdom to make the appearance at Royal Ascot. Black Caviar won the straight-six furlongs track by a head over Moonlight Cloud. Jockey, Luke Nolen, made it a really close contest as he eased Black Caviar after establishing a clear lead in the last quarter-mile. The jockey realized his mistake and was glad that he got away with it.

Black caviar started her racing career as a two-year-old in 2008 and won her debut by a huge margin - 5 lengths. In her second race, which was the Blue Sapphire Stakes, she won by 6 lengths. It was an impressive start as a rookie racehorse, but she went on to win every race she participated in. Other major wins worth noting are:

2011 was the peak year for Black Caviar as most of her major trophies came in that year. Her first race for the year was in February in the Lightning Stakes. That victory marked the end of an era for the mare as she became the number one ranked horse in the period of October 2010 - March 2011. Hay List lost in three consecutive races against Black Caviar in that year, which made it one of the fiercest rivalry at the time. At the end of 2011, Black Caviar was voted as the Horse of the Year in the annual Victorian Thoroughbred Racing Awards by members of the racing media. She won against So You Think, having 150 votes against the 134 of So You Think.

Notable Remarks

Black Caviar retired officially from racing on April 17, 2013. Every significant figure in the horse's career came together and decided that 25 was a good number, which was why she stopped racing after 25 wins in 25 starts. A year later, she gave birth to her first foal. She had three other foals, with the last one coming on September 22, 2017. Her first foal took after the mare and broke her maiden status in her second start. The race was in August 2017, and she led from start to finish.

So far in horse racing history, no horse has achieved as much as Black Caviar. It was an amazig run and we hope that another horse will take us on such amazing journey soon.
