Remington Park Picks

Remington Park is a racetrack which is located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The track was opened in 1988 and sits alongside a state-of-the-art casino, which houses over 750 gaming machines. It is now open 24/7 for simulcast betting, with the track itself hosting two seasons of live action across two different disciplines.

It hosts both Quarter Horse racing (March-July) and Thoroughbred racing (Early Sept.-Dec.), while the AMA Pro Flat Track motorcycling racing series also takes place here during the offseason.

Typically, racing takes place 67 days per year.

The Oklahoma venue hosts both dirt and turf racing, with the main track measuring one mile in circumference and being described as "conventional dirt," while the turf course is slightly shorter at seven furlongs.

The track also now hosts Oklahoma's richest race – the $1 million Heritage Place Futurity, which takes place each May. The Oklahoma Derby is another key race that takes place at the track and is held during the thoroughbred season.

The track is owned and operated by GlobalGaming SP, with the company taking over the day-to-day running of the track in2010.

Remington Park Track History

Remington Park Racetrack was the brainchild ofEdward J. DeBartolo Sr., who had a history of erecting shopping malls. He also owned Thistledown Racetrack in Ohio and Louisiana Downs and was keen to add a third venue to his portfolio.

Upon completion in 1988, it became the first world-class pari-mutuel track in Oklahoma and was an immediate hit with the local residents.

The track made the headlines shortly after opening by experimenting with a synthetic surface known as Equitrack. This consisted of utilized grains of sand coated with wax polymer and was designed to help the track stage live race-days regardless of the weather conditions.

It was also alleged to have provided fast track conditions throughout the fall. However, the new track began to show signs of deterioration and wear and tear during the warm summer months, and they were forced to backtrack as a result.

The synthetic surface was eventually replaced with a more traditional dirt composition, and no other US track went down this route until 2005 (Turfway Park).

In late 2000, the track installed adequate lighting facilities, which enabled racing to take place at all hours. Prior to this, meets were held exclusively in the mid-afternoon.

In 2005, the horseplayers association voted Remington Park as one of the best tracks in North America.

In 2010, Global Gaming SP took over the running of the track from Magna Entertainment Corporation. They purchased the venue at an auction in mid-2009, buying it out of bankruptcy.

There are a number of lucrative races held at the track, with the Springboard Mile one of the most valuable events on the calendar. In 2012, this race made headlines when an unlikely 128-1 shot entered the winner's enclosure. Texas Bling was ridden home by Erik McNeil and remains the longest-odds winner of the contest.

At the end of the 2018 season, it was announced that the pari-mutuel handle was up 7.4 percent from the previous year. Across the 609 races held at the track, total wagering was up $5 million over the last 12 months.

It was the first time in its 30-year history that the track was able to host two Grade 3 contests, with the Remington Park Oaks and Oklahoma Derby both being upgraded for the 2018 season.

Remington Park Track Configuration and Bias

At Remington Park, there tends to be a decent spread of winners. A number of years ago, the track opted to move the starting gate away from the inside rail, which meant that there was very little benefit to being drawn in stall one.

As a result, the outside posts can be quite a tricky proposition. For example, horses drawn in seven can often feel like they've been given post 11 or 12.

Although these statistics may have changed in recent years, there was a notable increase in horses going wire-to-wire atRemington Park between 2013 and 2016. On average, 35 percent of winners managed to make all the running over the mile dirt course at the track throughout 2014.This figure noticeably dropped when the distance was increased to one mile and 70 yards.

Winning Post Position

Looking at the stats from August-October 2019, stalls three, four and seven were the most productive gate positions for sprint contests on the main track. Twenty-six percent of winners came from stall four, while a quarter of all winners were drawn next door in stall three. Horses install five found it particularly tough, with just 11 percent of winners coming from this position.

Stall 10 was another notable starting berth, with 11.5 percent of winners coming from this position despite just 61 races featuring a double-figure contingent.

None of the 34 runners drawn in stalls 11 or 12 were victorious over the shorter trip.

In races held over the longer trip, it proved more fruitful to be drawn on the outside. Six of the 17 horses drawn in stall10 entered the winner's enclosure (35.5 percent), while one of the three runners positioned in stall 11 was victorious.

In contrast, just 6.7 percent of winners came from stall seven over the route.

On the turf, the inside trip was beneficial, with over 15 percent of all winners on the grass coming from this position.Stall nine was a tough gig, with just 7.8 percent of winners coming from this particular gate.

On the outside, one of the five runners drawn in stall 12 went past the winning post in front.

Remington Park Racing Season

Racing takes place throughout the year at Remington Park, with Quarter Horse contests being staged between March and July. Thoroughbred racing takes place in the fall and tends to begin late August/early September through to December.

With the addition of lighting at the track, they now stage a mixture of afternoon and early evening meets.
