Royal Ascot Preview

The 2021 Royal Ascot festival took place in June, and there was no shortage of talking points. There were three Breeders’ Cup Challenge races that took place, as well as the Gold Cup and Commonwealth Stakes. Below, you can find results from the biggest races from the 2021 meeting.

  • Queen Anne Stakes: Palace Pier

  • Prince Of Wales’s Stakes: Love

  • Gold Cup: Subjectivist

  • Commonwealth Cup: Campanelle

  • Coronation Stakes: Alcohol Free

  • Diamond Jubilee Stakes: Dream of Dreams

As always, the biggest race at Royal Ascot this year was the Gold Cup. Stradivarius was the horse that had all the attention for trainer John & Thady Gosden, as the legendary horse was looking to win a fourth straight renewal. Victory would have matched the record set by the great Yeats. However, the action on track didn’t see the fairytale play out that way. Frankie Dettori was unable to get a clear run in the race and was boxed in over the two-mile and four-furlong race. Instead, a new staying superstar emerged as Subjectivist, for Mark Johnston, won by five lengths from Princess Zoe.

A Breeders’ Cup place was on the line in the first race of the royal meeting, as the Queen Anne Stakes took place. Victory for Palace Pier in the opening Group 1 ensured that the horse regarded by many as the best in Europe over a mile officially earned his place in the Breeders’ Cup FanDuel Mile.

Other horses to have achieved their spots in the Breeders’ Cup later in the year were Love and Perfect Power, who won the Prince of Wales’s Stakes and Norfolk Stakes, respectively. Love’s victory means that she will be heading for the Breeders’ Cup Longines Turf, while Perfect Power officially earned his spot in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.

The featured race on the final day of the meeting is also a Breeders’ Cup Challenge race, as the winner of the Diamond Jubilee Stakes is awarded a place in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. Sir Michael Stoute trains the winner of the 2021 renewal of the race, as Dream of Dreams won by a length from Glen Shiel with Ryan Moore on board.

Trainers from around the world send horses to Royal Ascot for the meeting. American trainer Wesley Ward has achieved numerous victories at the festival throughout his career, and he was awarded another winner after a stewards review in the G1 Commonwealth Cup.

Campanelle was awarded the victory after a tight end to the race, as it was adjudged that Dragon Symbol, who crossed the line first, was drifting into the American raider in the closing stages.

Royal Ascot Event Information

Royal Ascot is one of the most special meetings in the world of horse racing. The event was established in 1768, but it didn’t become a more popular event until the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. For a long time, it was the only meeting that took place at Ascot, but that changed in 1939. One of the most unique factors about Royal Ascot is the history of the event. That is still evident today, with the Royal Procession opening the day of racing at 2 pm every day. This is a tradition that was started by King George IV in 1825.

The prize money on offer at Royal Ascot surpasses many meetings in Europe throughout the season. There is over £7.5 million available in prize money throughout the week, with over 500 horses making the trip to Ascot to compete in one of the races taking place over the five days. It is popular all around the world, with coverage being broadcast in 200 different territories. Lester Piggott is the leading jockey at the royal meeting, as he recorded 116 winners during his career.
